Remote Computerized Detection of Pre-clinical Cognitive Disorders – Bridging the Gap between Cognitive Training and Cognitive Assessment

An immense challenge faced by primary care health services worldwide is the timely detection of early cognitive decline. Staff shortages and lack of access to services leads to many cases of cognitive decline being undiagnosed until they have progressed to dementia. At the same time there is no consensus about the benefits of large scale community screening and thus policymakers are reluctant to dedicate the necessary resources for such large scale actions. Lately advances in technology have led to an increase of available computer administered tools for cognitive screening as well as for cognitive training and rehabilitation. As older adults are becoming increasingly computer savvy a large number of them are using cognitive training software programs on their own which allow them to train their cognitive functions from their comfort of their home. This is especially useful for people living in areas with no access to day centers or similar services for people with cognitive disorders.Based on previous findings highlighting the ability to detect pre-clinical cognitive decline based on the performance in a virtual reality (VR) cognitive training exercise, this study aims at introducing a paradigm shift on how computerized cognitive training exercises are employed. The goal of this study is to use longitudinal performance in a VR cognitive training exercise in order to detect pre-clinical cognitive decline in general hospital patients in Northern Greece.
