Sensitization for People with Dementia and their Relatives – State of Knowledge and Development of Prospects for Clinics

There is a great percentage of people who have cognitive impairment as a secondary diagnosis during their admission to hospitals. Issues concerning the spatio-temporal orientation, which come along with cognitive impairments, become evident in the daily lives of the hospitalized. This poses great challenges to the person affected? the dementia patient? as well as the hospital (/nursing) staff. Many times, the nursing staff present in general hospitals lack an appropriate education that would allow them to cope with such challenges; not to say the least, they struggle with associating behavioral patterns with their according symptoms. The aim of this dissertation is to develop an advanced training and education program for hospital staff? with special regards to the nursing staff. This will allow the people involved in the daily care of dementia patients to be prepared for the individual needs (and demands).
