Hospitalisations of People with Dementia: Epidemiologic Analyses based on Health Insurance Data

In the process of demographic ageing the proportion of people with dementia will rise, especially among people treated in acute care hospitals. Hospitalisations of people with dementia are accompanied by higher complications- and mortality rates, a higher risk for institutionalisation after discharge and a prolonged length of stay.  Neurobehavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia represent a great challenge for hospitals and their employees. For the best possible planning and improvement of care, epidemiologic data on indications, determinants, frequencies, duration and outcome of hospitalisations are necessary. Such data is limited, particularly in Germany. Within this dissertation the following research questions are dealt with:

  • Frequency, duration, indication and temporal sequence of hospitalisations
  • Possible determinants of the abovementioned outcomes
  • Changes in the dementia specific- and co-medication
  • Mortality during and after hospitalisations
